Arab League Hosts Meeting to Advance Roadmap for Nuclear, Radiological Emergency Response
The two-day meeting discusses avenues for supporting Arab combined efforts in the field of nuclear and radiological emergency preparedness and response, and bolstering coordination mechanisms among Arab countries and relevant regional and international entities, into line with international requirements and best practices in this field.
The agenda features a presentation on the Arab Roadmap in question and took stock of the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) activities, as well as an array of prioritized technical matters.
These include the impacts of nuclear and radiological emergencies on food and water safety, and the proposal for an expert mission to assess the current situation and the level of national preparedness for nuclear and radiological emergencies in Arab countries.
The agenda further includes a discussion of the electronic platform for the Arab Roadmap, as a tool to support information interchange and foster communication among the relevant national authorities.
This is in addition to organizing an orientation workshop on the international obligations related to nuclear and radiological emergencies and going over the strategic partnership document and providing support for the Arab Roadmap in the event of nuclear or radiological accidents or incidents.
The roadmap primarily aims to boost Arab coordination and keep Arab nations focused on addressing nuclear and radiological accidents and emergencies, in addition to sharing expertise and best practices, thereby helping protect people and the environment, as well as beef up safety and security systems in the Arab region.
